Virginia Beach police are searching for a man who allegedly created approximately 30 fraudulent library accounts to steal a Nintendo Switch gaming console and related games from the city’s library system.
The Virginia Beach Police Department said the suspect repeatedly used fake identities to check out the gaming equipment from local library branches without returning the items. The scheme involved creating multiple library accounts using false personal information, allowing the individual to circumvent the library’s borrowing policies and checkout limits.
Library officials discovered the pattern of fraudulent activity when they noticed the same gaming equipment was being checked out under different names but never returned to any Virginia Beach Public Library location. The Nintendo Switch console and games represent hundreds of dollars in stolen public property.
“This type of fraud not only costs taxpayers money but also deprives other library patrons of access to these popular gaming resources,” said a Virginia Beach Police Department spokesperson.
The Virginia Beach Public Library system, which serves the city’s 450,000 residents across multiple branches, offers gaming equipment as part of its digital literacy and entertainment programming. Nintendo Switch consoles and games are among the library’s most popular checkout items, particularly among younger patrons.
Investigators are reviewing security footage from various library locations and examining the digital trail left by the fraudulent accounts. The suspect allegedly used different names and contact information for each fake account, making initial detection difficult.
Library staff became suspicious when they noticed unusual borrowing patterns and began cross-referencing account information. They discovered multiple accounts with similar characteristics but different identifying details, all linked to the missing gaming equipment.
The case highlights ongoing challenges facing public libraries nationwide as they expand digital and gaming offerings while protecting against theft and fraud. Virginia Beach Public Library officials are now reviewing their account verification procedures to prevent similar incidents.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Virginia Beach Police Department or Virginia Beach Crime Solvers. The department has not released a description of the suspect or specific details about the fraudulent accounts to protect the ongoing investigation.
The stolen Nintendo Switch console and games remain missing. Library officials estimate the total value of the stolen property at several hundred dollars, which constitutes a felony theft charge under Virginia law.
This investigation remains active, and additional charges may be filed pending the outcome of the police department’s review of all fraudulent accounts and associated activities.
